Last week saw St Bede’s First School, Bedlington take part in another National Book week. Instead of just bringing along their favourite books, these fancy dress fanatics took Book Week one step further and dressed up in fancy dress costumes of their favourite character.
The most popular fancy dress costumes amongst the children were pirate fancy dress outfits. There were plenty of fancy dress eye patches, hat and swords to be seen! Even the teachers embraces Book Week by dressing up in fancy dress outfits too, what a great way of using fancy dress to encourage children to read!

With Royal Mail strike action scheduled for the end of this week (Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd October) we don’t want you fancy dressers panicking about delayed deliveries of fancy dress costumes. Royal Mail have advised that they have sound contingency plans in place to try and maintain a good level of service. However, the fundamental problem is the knock on effect that the strikes will have and the delays they will cause. So here is what we recommend you do to help ensure that you are not disappointed this Halloween.
If you are worried about not receiving your fancy dress order in time we strongly advise that you choose the Next Day Delivery option. This guarantees trackable, next day delivery before 4pm on orders placed before 5pm, Monday to Friday. There are a few postcode areas where Next Day Delivery is not possible (such as the Highlands and Islands of Scotland) so please refer to our website for further details. We use a courier company called APC Overnight for our Next Day Delivery service so providing that there are no major disasters your fancy dress costumes should be in safe hands!
Royal Mail have also advised that their Special Delivery service will also be affected by the strike action. Orders placed on Friday with Next Day Delivery will be delivered before 4pm on Monday with APC Overnight couriers. For this weekend only we cannot offer Saturday delivery.
If you have any queries before placing your fancy dress order please get in touch – we’d be happy to help!

Halloween is celebrated to the extreme these days with fancy dress costumes, trick or treating, wild parties and plenty of ghost stories and creepy goings on. But I wonder how many of you know about the origins of Halloween before it turned into a fancy dress fest?
Halloween goes as far back as 2000 years ago to the Celtic festival of Samhain. Halloween originates from the Celts in Northern France and Ireland celebrating their New Year on 1st November. The significance of this day was that it saw the end of harvest and summer and the beginning of winter, which was at the time associated with human death. On the eve of a new year Celts celebrated Samhain which was when they believed that ghosts of the dead returned to earth to cause havoc and damage crops. Bonfires were built in an attempt by the Celts to sacrifice crops and animals to lessen the effects of ghosts.
There were no fancy dress costumes like we see these days at the Samhain, but the Celts would wear costumes made up of animal heads and skins.
Once the Romans had conquered most of the Celtic land their festivals were combined with Samhain. So the passing of the dead was commemorated on one day, followed by a day of celebrating Pomona, the Roman goddess of trees and fruit. Now this is really interesting, Pomona is represented by a symbol of an apple which is probably where the great game apple bobbing came from!
Once the Christian influence was apparent in Celtic areas the pope at the time declared 1st November as All Saints Day. In today’s times some believe that the pope was attempting to put in place a Church sanctioned holiday as opposed to a Celtic festival of the dead. Later in AD 1000 the church made 2nd November All Souls Day which was a day meant for honouring the dead which was celebrated similarly to Samhain.
So there we have it, a brief history of Halloween. I hope that you found it informative so that when you are dressed up in your fancy dress costumes in a couple of weeks you’ll know where the tradition came from.

I’ve just stumbled across a bit of celeb fancy dress news that I just have to share with you. The weekend saw ex Sugababe Keisha Buchanan hit the town with chum Leona Lewis all dolled up in matching fancy dress costumes. The pair were off to Cafe de Paris
for some fancy dress action at a wig party. These girls didn’t stop at wigs though, oh no, they went the whole hog in very sexy Pirate Queen fancy dress costumes. We just happen to have the pleasure of selling the same fancy dress outfits…glad to see the girls have good taste!
The pair looked great in their fancy dress outfits, I’m sure they turned a few heads at the fancy dress bash. Nothing like a bit of celebrity fancy dress gossip to start the day…..
